The United Nations report on Gaza

A little more than one month ago, I celebrated the Gazan cease-fire, but I was skeptical at that time that such a cease-fire would bring peace to the Holy Land. I don’t believe that peace shall ever come as long as the State of Israel does not treat Palestinians with equality, and until Israel ceases to expand its land by occupying new land on the West Bank. Now I am increasingly worried about the civilians in Gaza and the effect these civilians will have on the peace of Israel.

Recently I read a report from the United Nations about the state of those living in Gaza that caused me great alarm. So much violence has been perpetrated against Gazan residents that I fear a new generation of angry people will be grow up to have animosity toward Israel. Mis-treating neighbors will never lead to the peace and security of Israel.

The United Nations report that I read makes me worried about the future peace of the Holy Land. The following were reported.

1.    Welfare agencies report that 9 of 10 children in Gaza show signs of “aggressive behavior” after living in a war zone for two years. Ninety percent of these children exhibit aggressive behavior toward younger children.

I can’t help but wonder if this “aggressive children” will someday channel their aggression toward Israel.

2.    Out of a Gazan population of 2 million, 1 million are now homeless and live in displacement centers.

Of course, the people who are now homeless because of the Israeli military, will hold no affection toward Israel or Israeli citizens. Security is best served by being on good terms with neighbors. Such displacement, I believe, will lead to less security for Israel in the next generation.

3.    Many of the displacement centers are overcrowded and have poor security. There is little legitimate security in these camps. Girls and women have been especially vulnerable to abuse.

I can only imagine what the men and boys who have affection toward these girls and women will grow up to become. Will they be the next generation of angry men? What will happen if they get arms in the future? I doubt that Israeli citizens will sleep peacefully when these angry men grow up to be a new generation that blames Israel for their plight.

I want the State of Israel to live in peace and prosperity. The best way, I believe to achieve this, is for Israel to respect its neighbors. I was raised with the ethic, “fear none, but respect all.” I hope Israel adopts this ethic and begins to fund relief efforts for the citizens of Gaza. It is in the blessing of neighbors that Israel will itself find peace.
